There are several production models in the film industry, the Hollywood production, Indie cinema or Avant Garde. I will be focusing on the Hollywood type, it’s the most mainstream and commercial of the three, and there are three key functions for this type of cinema. The first being ‘providing models’, the main characters of the pictures mostly as heroes with a clear moral code and often a romantic storyline. The second function, ‘directing audience expectations’ where the stories cater to the public the want to sell it to. And the third function, ‘evaluative categories’, that allows the comparison of similar films in the same genre.

The Hollywood production model uses stars as a promotional tool, where young actors were usually renamed and given a ‘persona’ they had to portray for the audience. It still is a part of the process, the use of a celebrity’s likeness to sell the movie, despite the great decline of studio system. Movie posters nowadays still show the reliance they have on stars to promote the pictures. In the Hollywood narrative some of the most vital elements are the continuity editing, the centering of action in the frame and creating a coherent fictional narrative space, among other things.
